hematology/oncology

The Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology has an outstanding tradition of providing excellence in patient care and research. Our program is renowned in the Southwest for its clinical expertise in pediatric hematology-oncology and stem cell transplantation, providing state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment and long-term management of patients with pediatric hematologic and oncologic diseases.

Patient Care

Our mission is to provide the highest quality of care and support for children with cancer and blood disorders and to promote acquisition of knowledge that will lead to improvement in therapy and cures.

  • Our Hematologists-Oncologists provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents and young adults with cancer. We are a full member of Children’s Oncology Group (COG), so our patients are eligible to be treated with the most current protocols offering them the most promising and newest cancer therapies. We also have an active clinical research program allowing us to enter patients with refractory or relapsed tumors on newer investigational drugs as part of phase I/II/III clinical trials.
  • Our pediatric transplant program offers autologous peripheral blood or bone marrow transplantation and related or unrelated peripheral blood, bone marrow and cord blood transplantation. We are the largest pediatric BMT program in the Southwest having performed over 400 pediatric transplants including more than 150 cord blood transplants since 1995.
  • Our specialists provide medical care to patients with sickle cell disease, other hemoglobinopathies and chronic anemias.
  • Our medical team offers ongoing comprehensive care to children and young adults with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
  • Our pediatric Hematologists-Oncologists provide 24hr inpatient and outpatient consultation services for children and adolescents with blood disorders or cancers.
