NURSERY ROTATION
This rotation is supervised by the ambulatory attending and resident.
OBJECTIVES:
- To learn how to evaluate the normal newborn and his family from both a medical and psychosocial perspective.
- To know how to identify both medical and social high risk factors in newborns and how to proceed with appropriate follow-up.
- To develop some expertise in talking with families about anticipatory guidance and well child care.
- To be introduced to the care of the sick newborn through weekly two hour seminars with the neonatology attending.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- To see (at least) one mother-infant pair daily and continue daily follow-up of the pair while they remain in the hospital. The assessment of the infant and the mother should include the following:
- Examine infant as soon as possible after birth (preferably in transitional nursery), assign gestational age, plot infant on intrauterine growth curve.
- Conduct initial interview with family as soon as possible after birth.
- Write-up a complete H&P based upon information obtained from maternal OB records, intrapartum record, transitional record, interview with mother, physical exam.
- Formulate a problem list: write an assessment and plan of management for each problem listed.
- Write daily progress notes (which need to be countersigned by a resident).
- Write discharge note, make discharge plans after discussing with resident or attending.
2. Discuss your patients on a daily basis with the ambulatory attending or the house officer.
3. At discharge, consider appropriate follow-up plans for your patient and discuss the rationale for these plans with your attending.
